Below are some of the most common causes of foot pain:
- Foot joint misalignment & dysfunction
- Bunions, calluses
- Neuromas
- Heel spurs
- Plantar fasciitis
- Fallen arches
- Stress fractures
- Ankle sprains
- Tight Achilles tendon
- Tendonitis
The pathway of most foot problems typically involves cumulative/repetitive or single-event trauma to the foot, causing bones and joints to lose their proper position within the foot. These areas eventually fail after years of walking. The foot’s ability to support the weight of the body is compromised and the ligaments, tendons and joints experience wear and tear, leading to pain in a particular area of the foot.
Foot problems can also often cause pain in the knees, hips and lower back as these areas compensate and eventually get strained themselves. Correcting the foot problem can therefore correct these problems.
Being overweight, engaging in sports that involve high impact forces to your feet (running, basketball, most sports) and frequently wearing tight shoes (and for women high heels) can predispose your feet to breakdown.
