Common hip pain is often due to degenerated cartilage. Normally, the cartilage surrounding the femoral head is smooth and nearly frictionless. With degeneration, small pits form making movement within the socket irregular and abrasive. Eventually, nerve endings underneath the cartilage are exposed and pain becomes unbearable. The individual usually opts for a hip replacement at this point.
